Corporate Citizenship
U. S. Steel Kosice is an active and responsible integral part of society, significantly supporting economic development in the Kosice region as well as the Slovakian economy as a whole. Aiming to increase employment and boost the economy of Eastern Slovakia, in 2001 the Company established the Economic Development Center (EDC).
During the 6 years of its activity the EDC assisted 26 foreign investors to set up in Eastern Slovakia and by doing so contributed to the creation of 4 200 new jobs. Part of the EDC´s activity was to participate actively in the development of Industrial Parks, thus further supporting economic growth in this part of Slovakia.
The EDC has passed on its best practices to the relevant authorities in the Kosice Self-governing Region, which has progressively taken over its activities of assisting investors and promoting the Region as a suitable investment environment.
In 2002 the U. S. Steel Kosice Foundation was set up with the aim of supporting public-benefit projects in health-care and education, financially supporting science, culture and charity. U. S. Steel Kosice's priorities in the field of donations focus primarily on assisting and supporting those who are directly dependent on such support, especially children's homes and the disabled, as well as organizations and clubs involved in social and charitative activities.
For its philanthropical activities U. S. Steel Kosice has gained the U.S. State Department's Award for Corporate Excellence, and the Pontis Foundation's Via Bona Slovakia award.
Main fields of support:
- Health care -projects aimed at improving health-care services provided by facilities in and around Kosice.
- Science, education and schools - projects for elementary and secondary schools and universities. The aim of the scholarship program is to support talented children from foster homes, single-parent and socially-disadvantaged families in Eastern Slovakia in their university studies.
- Sport - development and support for pre-teen and junior sections of sports clubs, as well as traditional sports events organized in the Kosice region and Eastern Slovakia. The "Your Chance to Play" project supports children who are gifted at sports, especially future ice-hockey and basketball talents from socially-disadvantaged families.
- Culture - sponsorship of the most important events with city, national and international character. U. S. Steel Kosice is also involved in renovation of historical buildings. The Talent Night competition is intended to support music bands, singers and dancers from Eastern Slovakia.
- Charity - support for children, mentally and physically disabled people, and also those who are not able to improve their situation without assistance from economically stronger entities.
- Safety and ecology - environmental projects for communities in the surrounding area, supporting organizations and associations. Support for ecological projects implemented in the form of competitions in elementary and secondary schools in and around Kosice.
- Romany community - the Equal Opportunities project in cooperation with the Kosice Self-Governing Region and local NGO's seeks solutions to specific Roma issues in the fields of education and employment.
