Safety Project

Yesterday, Tuesday, September 13th, U. S. Steel Kosice began a professional safety project in Kosice's secondary schools, intended to encourage young people to realize the absolute necessity of working safely, always using personal protective clothing and equipment whenever they are required, and becoming convinced that every injury can be prevented.
The project began at the Metallurgical Apprentice School in Saca and will be continuing until December this year. U. S. Steel Kosice President David H. Lohr spoke to the future steelmakers, followed by Vice-presidents Scott Pape and Miroslav Kiralvarga, General Manager Jan Vranec, and representatives of the school.

American Ambassador in Kosice

On Monday U. S. Steel Kosice was visited by the Ambassador of the USA in Slovakia Rodolphe M. Vallee. This special guest was welcomed by USSK President David H. Lohr and other top management representatives of the company. After the official discussions the American Ambassador visited the USSK Gallery and then several production operations around the works to familiarize himself with the working of the company.
Later in the morning he gave a lecture at the InfoUSA Center in Kosice on the topic: It is our duty to help those who seek freedom, and over lunch he met Kosice entrepreneurs and members of the American Chamber of Commerce in Slovakia. The Ambassador was also received by the Mayor of Kosice Zdenko Trebula, he met journalists for a press conference, and in the evening he attended a concert given by the Kosice State Philharmonia dedicated to the victims of the terrorist attack on New York and Washington of September 11th 2001.

New department at Saca Hospital

On Monday, September 12th, the official opening took place at Kosice-Saca Hospital, the first private hospital in Slovakia, of the new Department of Occupational Medicine and Clinical Toxicology in the building of the Hospital's Physiotherapy Department. The opening was attended by USSK top managers, as this department will substantially raise the standard of care provided to USSK employees as well as to inhabitants of the villages in the vicinity of the steelworks.

Visegrad Days in Kosice

The Days of Visegrad in Kosice rank among the city's most attractive cultural events. This year they begin tomorrow, September 15th, and Kosice citizens will be meeting Polish, Hungarian, Czech and Slovak artists, actors and musicians right through to mid-December.

TherTechForm 2005

Tale in the Low Tatras was the venue last week, from September 6th to 9th, for the 4th international conference named TherTechForm 2005 focusing on theoretical and technological problems of forming steel and non-ferrous metals Among the approximately 300 participants from Slovakia and abroad there were of course representatives of U. S. Steel Kosice.
Jozef Billy and Jan Skodron from the Research and Development Division were themselves members of the conference's organizing committee. Around sixty specialist lectures were presented at the event, including several prepared by Kosice steelmakers from the Quality Management and R&D Divisions. This international conference, jointly organized this year by the Department of Metal-forming at the Faculty of Metallurgy of the Technical University Kosice and Podbrezova Steelworks, is held regularly at three-year intervals.
Its aim is to enable research workers and engineers in practice to exchange experience of the current state of knowledge in the fields of research and applied technologies.
