External EMS audit
Early yesterday morning the second repeat audit of the environmental management system (EMS) in our company began. This is at the same time also an extension audit
to meet the requiremments of the amended standard STN EN ISO 14001:2005. Over the course of three days the auditors are carrying out random checks on the state of the EM system in selected
operations of the Hot and Cold Strip Mills, Surface Finishing, Dispatching and Metallurgical Products divisions, as well as several specialist units. Environmental protection is one of the six
principles driving our company in its business activities, and so it is accorded great importance, as confirmed by the financially highly-demanding capital investment and modernization projects
aimed at the ecological improvement of the technologies and processes in U. S. Steel Kosice.
Metallurgy Days 2005 in Kosice
The Metallurgy Days now have a tradition of several years, and this year they are taking place on November 7th and 8th on the premises of the Secondary Technical
School for Metallurgy on Alejova Street in Kosice. They begin with the ceremonial assembly at 11am on November 7th, and at 3pm the Open Day starts, intended mainly for elementary school pupils
and their parents, as well as the educational advisors for these schools. Other events on this day will be an open session of the members of the Hutnik ("Steelmaker") civic association and a
pupils' inter-school basketball tournament.
The Metallurgy Days culminate on November 8th with the 7th in the series of official international specialist conferences, organized on the theme of "Youth -
expertise - choice of vocation" and attended by representatives of state and social organizations, universities and U. S. Steel Kosice, as well as foreign guests, teachers and pupils of
the Secondary Technical School for Metallurgy. The highlight event of the Metallurgy Days will be the traditional Sachtak or guild celebration, beginning at 5pm on November 8th at the Hutny
Projekt building in Kosice.
Third evening for long-serving empoyees
On Friday of last week the premises of Ferrocentrum Social Club were filled again, for the third time this year, with long-serving steelworks employees, so that they
could celebrate together with their colleagues and U. S. Steel Kosice management members their 30th, 35th and 40th years of work at the Kosice steel plant. Nearly two hundred
celebrators from the Power Plant, Services, Mechanics, Repairs and Metallurgical Products divisions took their seats for the evening in the grandly-decorated Social Club hall.
The "youngest" among them, with 30 years of employment, received letters of thanks and silver commemorative plaques at the entrance to the hall itself. All the women
were also complimented with a red rose. As the evening went on, their longer-serving colleagues, women with 35 years and men with 40 years of work for the company, were also presented with
similar letters of thanks and gold commemorative medals, and they received an additional gift of a wristwatch engraved with their own name. The steelworkers were also thanked for their loyalty to
the firm, as on the previous occasions, by U. S. Steel Kosice President David H. Lohr.
