Business breakfast for East Slovakian entrepreneurs

How to gain customers who could bring in the sort of profit a company desires: that was the principal topic of the working breakfast organized in Kosice recently by the American Chamber of Commerce in Slovakia, specially for East Slovakian entrepreneurs. They heard tips on how to do this from Graeme Rankine, Professor of Accountancy at the Thunderd School of Global Management, a renowned specialist in finance, acquisitions and management, and holder of many awards in these fields.

Simultaneous videoconference for journalists in Bratislava and Kosice

Journalists in many countries become the victims of various kinds of crime simply because they try to bring their readers the most up-to-date news reports. This fact was mentioned among others at a videoconference with international participation held last week by means of a "tele-bridge" between journalists in Bratislava and Kosice. The American Ambassador in Slovakia Rodolphe Vallee also took part in the event, speaking about the freedom of the press in the USA. In the United States it has been journalists in particular who have helped to uncover many scandals with their information, he said. According to Vallee, people in Slovakia do not like speaking about corruption. But it is precisely about this that it is necessary to speak the most, he emphasized. His recommendation to Slovak journalists was: "Be independent, seek the truth, and write about it."

Metalurgia 2007 winners are known

The students' scientific and specialist conference "Metalurgia" is one of the traditions which the Faculty of Metallurgy at the Technical University in Kosice is particularly proud of, and which it encourages and develops. It exists for the students. It is intended to contribute to their specialist education especially by motivating them towards more individual scientific research work, dealing with a scientific or technical problem which is assigned to them, and developing their ability to present the results they obtain or the solution they propose. The fact that this intention is being fulfilled was confirmed by the future metallurgists taking part in the latest edition of this annual conference, which took place on Wednesday, April 18th. The departmental rounds of the competition produced 69 students who got through to the faculty finals to present their work in six specialist sections. The winners were presented with their prizes and personally congratulated by U. S. Steel Kosice Vice-president Martin Pitorak.

Ukrainian trades-unionists at USSK

The 22 trades-union officials in the group from the Dnepropetrovsk area in Ukraine were left with deep impressions by their visit to U. S. Steel Kosice last week. Many of them were seeing our steelworks for the first time. They were surprised at the linkage of the Company with services for the employees, including health care, transport and banking, for example. They said that it was more like a small town rather than a steelworks in their perception, based on their experience from home.

Career Day

The best part of 30 companies with foreign involvement operating in Slovakia, among them U. S. Steel Kosice, accepted the invitation from the organizers of this year's 4th edition of the annual Career Day at Kosice's Technical University. A wide range of job vacancies offered by well-known companies, most of which had prepared their own individual presentations for interested students, attracted hundreds of undergraduates to the University's Aula Maxima. Many of them, as is now traditional, stopped off at the stand of the Kosice steel producer. They were interested in opportunities for summer vacation jobs, the conditions for getting a summer internship place next year, the permanent job vacancies now on offer and the dates of the relevant selection procedures, but also when they will be able to find on the internet the topics for the "Inzinier" and "Bakalar" degree dissertations for the academic year 2007/2008.
