Families Do Sport

Last Saturday the grounds of the Sports-Fun Area on Alejova Street in Kosice were full of people in good mood. Kosice steelmakers and their nearest and dearest who accepted the Company's invitation to this historic first event by the name of Families Do Sport got their fill of exercise and enjoyment. Many came to play soccer, streetball or table tennis. Before the national anthems of Slovakia and the USA sounded out, and before the exhibition soccer game between Slovak and American managers, the first thing on the programme, U. S. Steel Kosice President David H. Lohr invited Carpathian Foundation Director Laura Dittel to speak, who briefly presented the grant program for the region jointly set up by the Foundation and U. S. Steel Kosice, entitled "Together for the Region".
The aim of the program is to support local communities, above all those in which employees of USSK and its subsidiaries live or are active. The closing date for project applications will be January 28th 2008. We will be supporting projects up to a maximum amount of 100 000 SKK each, and the total budget for the program is one million Slovak crowns. This grant program is the joint activity of the Carpathian Foundation and U. S. Steel Kosice, a company which acts responsibly in its region, knows it and understands it. This was not the only program, however, which the sporting steelmakers were the first to hear about. Young people primarily from socially-disadvantaged families have been the target group so far for the U. S. Steel Kosice Scholarship Program. USSK has been assisting them with their further education at colleges and universities. Now USSK is extending this program to include children of employees of the Company and its subsidiaries, announced President David Lohr.
