Susan M. Suver at U. S. Steel Kosice

On Monday, August 25th, U. S. Steel Kosice was visited by U. S. Steel Corporation Vice President Human Resources Susan M. Suver, accompanied by her colleagues Rick Canada and Ronald Tekely. The head of human resources came to Slovakia to present the program for seeking out and preparing talented employees as potential managers. Yesterday, August 26th, U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke and members of the Kosice steelworks management were familiarized with the content and aims of this new program. Susan Suver also met the USSK HR team, who will be implementing the project here in Kosice. She made use of her visit to meet some of the ex-patriot staff as well. Today, August 27th, the guests are visiting the steelworks in Serbia, and tomorrow, back in Kosice again, they will be meeting university students taking part in the summer internship program in USSK. They fly back to the USA on Friday of this week.

HDG Line No.3 passes final acceptation tests

The final performance test, which hot-dip galvanizing line no. 3 underwent last week, confirmed that U. S. Steel Kosice's latest big capital investment meets all the acceptance conditions required in the supply contract for the new line. Nothing now prevents the companies SMS Demag and U. S. Steel Kosice from signing the acceptance documents. This was the second successful FAT (Final Acceptance Test) this year. The first 24-hour FAT was carried out and passed on April 14th and 15th, the second on August 18th and 19th. The aim of the tests, carried out in the presence of the supplier, was to demonstrate 100 per cent efficiency of the line, that is 100 per cent productivity and 98 per cent qualitative yield. The line fulfilled both requirements, equally for the production of galvanized (GI) as for galvannealed (GA) material.

Conti-casting to be renovated

Both plants for continuous casting of steel into slabs at the Steel Plants division of U. S. Steel Kosice await extensive reconstruction and modernization this autumn. The aim of the repairs is to increase the slab production capacity. First it's the turn of conti-casting plant no. 2 on September 2nd. The center of attention will be the line's cooling system, becaue its modernization will enable the slab casting speed to be increased. The older of the two plants, CC Plant 1 in Steel Plant 2, will be undergoing repairs in October of this year during a 35-day shutdown. One adaptation which the maintenance staff are carrying out on separate parts of the line is intended to remove the bottleneck in production flow represented by CC Plant 1.

Families do sport for the second time

The Fun-Sports Area on Alejova Street in Kośice is to be the venue in just a few weeks time, on October 4th, for the second edition of the "Families Do Sports" event. Those who took part in the premiere last year can confirm that it was a day full of competitions, games and great atmosphere. Steelmakers and their family members will be able to try their strengths and skills in mixed teams playing soccer, streetball, table-tennis and table soccer. It is possible to apply right up until September 26th at the Public Affairs Department in the USSK Public Access Area.
