John Surma at U. S. Steel Kosice

Yesterday, April 15th, U. S. Steel Kosice was visited by USS Corporation Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Surma accompanied by Senior Vice President Strategic Planning, Business Services & Administration David H. Lohr, Vice President Human Resources Susan M. Suver and other members of the Corporation management. After an initial session with U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke and several Company representatives, who brought them up to date with information on events at the Corporation's Kosice works, the guests met Company managers and other employees for a discussion on business activities in the current circumstances. In the afternoon they went on a guided tour of the steelworks. They saw for themselves how work is proceeding on the extension of USSK's electricity input substation, and they looked round the converters shop at Steel Plant no. 2 and the hot wide-strip line at the Hot Rolling Mill.

Maintenance team manages complex repair perfectly

Last week USSK maintenance workers successfully completed the replacement of the sloping gas main on blast furnace no. 3. This project was carried out for the first time by Company employees working by themselves, without assistance from any external supplier companies. "Experienced managers and employees from the Blast Furnaces, Maintenance and Mechanics Divisions and engineering and occupational safety departments worked together for several weeks on preparing the plans, making new pipes and replacing the sloping gas main itself, which required the greatest effort. They carried out all these activities to a very high standard, maintaining all the principles of occupational safety," was how USSK Vice President Operations Patrick J. Mullarkey described the project.

Kosice ice-hockey players are Slovakian champions again

After a decade the ice-hockey players of HC Kosice have delighted their fans by gaining the title of champions of Slovakia again. They brought the title home to Kosice from Skalica, where they defeated the local team in the finals of the play-offs of the ice-hockey extra league by a margin of 3:2 after a penalty shoot-out at the end of their sixth finals match together. Yesterday, April 15th, the players and the coaching team were welcomed home by Kosice City Mayor Frantisek Knapik, and in the early evening they celebrated winning the valuable trophy together with the people of Kosice. "We thank them for their brilliant representation of the club, the city and the whole of our region. By winning the champions' title they have repaid the assistance and support not only of the Club's sponsors, but of the people of Kosice themselves," commented HC Kosice President Miroslav Kiralvarga at the official reception with the Mayor of the City.
