USSK fire-fighter among the best
"Slovakia's professional fire-fighters rank among Europe's elite rescue workers. They demonstrated this again on May 30th in Budapest, the venue for the prestige
extreme international fire-fighters' competition, appropriately entitled "Toughest Firefighter Alive - Hungary 2009". Among those representing Slovakia outstandingly in this very demanding
competition was 31-year-old USSK employee Adrian Ficik from the Works Fire-Fighting Unit. In the M 30 age category (30 to 35 years) he achieved third place.
Opatovska Rallye runs for the twelfth time
Last week in Kosice saw the running of the twelfth edition of the annual Opatovska Rallye - "Living at Full Throttle". This event brings pleasure to the disabled
boys and girls at the Opatovska Street Community School in Kosice, and managers, artists, media presenters and teachers all come to support the good cause. It is also traditional now that
managers from the Kosice steelworks take the wheel and drive some of the cars. Taking active part in the competition were thirty four-member crews, who had to complete a 45-kilometer course, a
driving skills test and a highway code quiz.
Kosice Balloon Fiesta 2009
From June 10th to 14th, weather permitting, the skies above Kosice will once again be full of gently sailing hot-air balloons. The 16th edition of the annual
international Kosice Balloon Fiesta 2009 has begun. The organizers expect to have 14 balloon teams participating, coming here from around Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia and the
Netherlands. Of course there will be a wide range of accompanying events as well. The Fiesta's main sponsor this year is the Carpathian Foundation, which has prepared an exhibition for visitors
called "the Colorful Little Town of Non-Profit Organizations". This exhibition presents the best projects implemented by non-governmental organizations in Eastern Slovakia.
Young Leader 2009
The independent non-profit organization named Junior Achievement Slovakia, in cooperation with U. S. Steel Kosice, has prepared another regional round for
this school year of the competition for secondary school students called Young Leader 2009. The winners of this competition, the judging of which took place just a few days ago, go forward to the
Slovakian national finals, where they will have the opportunity to take part in the Young Leaders' Conference and compete for the title of Most Successful Leader as part of the secondary schools'
Applied Economics program.
