More than 90 specialists dealing with issues of production, processing and finalizing of hot- and cold-rolled steel strips came from the Czech Republic, China, the Netherlands, Croatia, South Africa, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Italy, Ukraine, the USA and Slovakia to take part in the 8th edition of the international conference named Steel Strips 2011, which was held from October 4 to 6 at Stara Lesna in the High Tatras. The aim of this forum is to present theoretical, technological and industrial results in the field of hot and cold rolling and finalizing of steel strips.
The symposium comprised three sections filled with discussions on the topics of mechanical and metallurgical technologies in the process of hot rolling of strips, cold rolling of strips, and modeling and simulating processes of strip rolling. A number of the conference participants took the opportunity to go on a plant tour round the operations of U. S. Steel Kosice. Patronage of this event, which is regularly organized by the Steel Strips Society, was accepted by U. S. Steel Kosice President David J. Rintoul.

Technical diagnosticians exchange experience

Kosice was the venue on October 5 and 6 for the 14th international research conference named DIS - Theory and Application of Methods of Technical Diagnostics. This event ranks among the biggest and most prestigious in the field of technical diagnostics in Slovakia, and it attracted the participation of more than 60 individual and collective members of the Association of Technical Diagnosticians of the Slovak Republic (ATD SR). Diagnosticians from U. S. Steel Kosice were interested in contributions concerning practical measurement methods, as well as new insights in the field of development of instrument technology and software environments.

USSK management announces voluntary collection to help critically-sick children

With the aim of helping No.3 Clinic for Pediatric Anestheziology and Intensive Care at the University Children's Hospital in Kosice to acquire a mobile resuscitation bed and other special equipment most needed by health workers in caring for critically-sick children, in the last few days the management of U. S. Steel Kosice have announced a new fund-raising collection. It has become a tradition, and this year will be no exception, that the steelmaking company and the U. S. Steel Kosice Foundation donate the same sum each as the proceeds from the collection. The combined gift of funds will be presented by Company managers to representatives from No.3 Clinic for Pediatric Anestheziology and Intensive Care at the Christmas charity concert.

Steelmakers also run the Marathon course

This year's 88th edition of the international Kosice Peace Marathon was dominated by the duel for victory between the Kenyan and the Ethiopian runners. This time, on October 2, the victory laurels were taken from our city by Elijah Kiprono Kemboi of Kenya, who may not have set a new course record with his time of 2h 11m 15sec, but he did repeat his personal best time, which he ran up in Antwerp earlier this year.
U. S. Steel Kosice had its representatives in all of the race disciplines. The largest number of them were in the Half-marathon race. There is increasing popularity among recreational runners for the 4 x 1/4 marathon relay competition. There were two teams on that course from BSC, and two other teams were composed of American managers. Steelmakers also featured among the in-line skaters.
