WHY STEEL FOR PACKAGING

Prázdny

100% protection of the content from light, water and air

STEEL AS A PACKAGING MATERIAL

Food in cans retains the same vitamin content as a freshly prepared food - without any preservatives. Shelf life is up to 3 years.

STEEL

  • Most recycled packaging material in Europe
  • Infinite loop of recycling for a sustainable future
  • Magnetic separation makes sorting of the scrap easier
  • 100% protection of the content from light, water and air
  • Unobjectionable raw material for food packaging in terms of hygiene and safety

RECYCLING AND SUSTAINABILITY

Usage of the steel as a packaging material is an effective, responsible and environmentally friendly way for food and industrial ingredients packaging.

Steel is a 100% recyclable material that can be recycled indefinitely and without any decline in quality (primary and secondary steels have identical properties). Thanks to recycling, CO2 origination in the steel production process has been reduced by half over the last 40 years. Reprocessing of the recycled material results in reduced emissions by 42% and energy saving by 30%. Basic raw materials and water are saved which reduces adverse impacts on the environment.

Recycling REDUCES WASTE of raw materials

METAL SCRAP UTILIZATION

Simple and INEXPENSIVE magnetic separation

In Europe, 57% of new cans are made OF RECYCLED MATERIALS

Steel packaging recycling saves CO2 that is equivalent to 1.5 MULTIPLE OF THE MATERIAL WEIGHT

75% OF ALL PACKAGING was recycled in 2013

2.7 MILLION TONS of recycled material = 5.4 MILLION TONS of saved raw material

Today, MORE THAN 90% of the STEEL is RECYCLED and repeatedly used

Production of tin packaging for food and the subsequent opportunity to recycle for further reuse makes its production sustainable in the long term for future generations. Processing of large proportions of recyclable materials means less landfills and thus less environmental burden.

U. S. Steel Košice participates in new solutions development and comes up with innovations in the area of sheets for packaging - for food, beverage and industrial cans, tins, lids, closures and other products. The objective is providing a comprehensive portfolio of products that meet high demands on the quality of the packaging material for its use in the food industry.

FOOD PACKAGING

To ensure the long-term freshness of the food, use of steel as the packaging material is the most appropriate. Steel provides cans and tins with extraordinary features thanks to which the food retains its aroma, flavor, vitamins and all

nutritional values without any preservatives. Cans are extremely resistant to mechanical damage and they protect the content of the packaging from contamination by other substances and bacteria. Tin packaging is waterproof and

hermetically sealed. Thanks to this fact, long-term durability of the food is ensured in any storage conditions without quality concerns.

  • Tin-can protects the food from germs without any preservatives

  • It preserves freshness of the food for up to three years

  • Packaging of all sizes reduces waste

  • Vitamin content is the same as is in the case of fresh-food

  • Long shelf life at an ambient temperature

  • 100% barrier prevents presence of air, light and contaminatioN

EFFICIENCY OF PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION

The production and filling of cans takes place at high speeds, which can allow up to hundreds of food cans per minute are produced and filled. Such filled cans are ready immediately for distribution.

Premium package from production

Steel as the packaging material provides resistance to impact, puncture and high pressure (during the filling process) and prevents from mechanical damage to the cans.

Tin-cans represent the primary packaging material that protects its content. Thanks to resistance of the can itself no additional package is needed during shipping.

COMPLETE PROTECTION OF THE CONTENT throughout the distribution process

NO NEED OF ANY FURTHER PACKAGING

LOWER COSTS
for suppliers

STORING SPACES OPTIMIZATION - palettes with cans can be stacked

70% OF ENERGY SAVING within the supply chain

COST SAVING
FOR TRANSPORTATION

NO NEED FOR ANY COOLING

STORAGE and Transportation of the food AT ANY AMBIENT TEMPERATURE

Lower energy consumption

By using steel as a packaging material for food, cost of transportation and storage can be significantly reduced. Since the canned food is stored at ambient temperatures, no cooling is needed. This allows the food transportation from long distances without any quality loss and without high costs.

Food waste limitation

Tins and cans made of steel enable consumers to select the appropriate size of packaging. At the same time, such food preserving enables balancing of current food production and real demand - consumption. Thanks to such processing, the food retains its high quality as well as proportion of vitamins over the next three years.

On average, 22 million tons of food is thrown away in the EU every year. The long-term durability is one of the solutions to reduce such excessive waste and contribute to sustainability. By the food waste reduction the adverse impact on environment can be reduced.

UP TO 3 BILLION OF PEOPLE
could get their fill eating total amount of the discarded food.

40% of all food produced
DOES NOT GET TO CONSUMERS.
