Steel Generation Ball
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of U. S. Steel Kosice, the Steel Generation Ball was held on January 16 at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel. U. S. Steel Corporation Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John P. Surma as well as former U. S. Steel Kosice Presidents John H. Goodish and David H. Lohr took part in this event.
"We have been doing business in Slovakia for ten years. All the time we have made efforts to act responsively to our employees, our partners, and the community. With them we want to celebrate this important milestone in our business," said George F. Babcoke, current President of U. S. Steel Kosice, before the ball.
Around 390 invited guests including company customers, partners and managers, as well as representatives of regional and local administration, were welcomed by three live statues symbolizing the steelmaking process: coal, fire and steel. The Steel Generation was also represented by the Generation Tree - the main ball motif. The ball organization committee led by Kathleen Babcoke also prepared a charity auction, which has become a tradition at U. S. Steel Kosice balls. Guests could bid for three generations of products: the senior generation was represented by crocheted tablecloths made by Autumn of Life seniors club members, the middle generation by paintings from an open air workshop involving company employees and local painters, and the youngest generation was represented by photographs taken by students of the Film School in Kosice. The proceeds from the auction amounting to 3 940 euro will help St. Luke´s Geriatric Institute in Kosice.
The Ball program featured performances by Lucie Bila accompanied by Petr Malasek on the piano, Pavol Hammel, the Romathan folk group, No Limits and the U. S. Steel Kosice Band consisting of several American company managers.
