Tricky Words in this week's OVI

Medals, orders of distinction and awards. It's possible that the expression "orders of distinction" is too official for referring to the medals presented to the USSK employees at the Day of Miners, Geologists, Metallurgists and Oilmen. I mean "too official" in terms of diplomatic protocol, and I'm not suggesting the awards were less than serious.

The highest civilian orders of distinction (orders of merit) in Slovakia are the Order of the White Cross of Slovakia, the Order of Andrej Hlinka, the Order of Ľudovít Štúr, the Cross of M. R. Štefánik, the Cross of Pribina and the Cross of the President of the Slovak Republic. Another word for medal is "decoration", which must be understood in context, because the other meanings of decoration are "ozdoba" and work of a "maliar-natierač". "Award" is a very general word covering everything from Oscars and Golden Lions, through medals and badges, to certificates and even money in cash.
