Divisions
COKERY
This is one of the first production units in the steelmaking process. Its task is to ensure the supply of metallurgical coke - one of the principal primary materials for making pig iron. Coke is produced using the process of dry distillation of black coal in the ovens of the two coking batteries. The by-product of coke production is coke gas, which is cleaned in the Chemicals plant. The separated-out substances go to be used mainly in the chemical industry and agriculture.
BLAST FURNACES
These are the part of primary metallurgical production responsible for iron ore materials into molten metal. The three blast furnaces were built in the late 1960's, but have undergone thorough modernization, and in terms of technical equipment and production capacity they currently rank among the most highly-developed in Europe. The U. S. Steel Kosice works is the terminus for a broad-gauge railway line leading from Russia and Ukraine. Four sintering lines turn the iron ore and additives into sinter, which forms the major part of the charge for each blast furnace. Pig iron is transported in special mobile mixers directly for further processing to the Steel Plants Division.
STEELWORKS
This is one of the fundamental links in the integrated steelmaking chain. Four oxygen converters in the two Steel Plants are responsible for producing a wide rangge of steels for various areas of application. Apart from the traditionally-produced constructional, deep-drawing and high-tensile steels, the new RH-type vacuum degassing plant which was brought into operation in 2002 enables new grades of steel to be made for the electrotechnical industry, for example transformer steel. Currently 100% of the steel produced here is cast into slabs in two continuous-casting plants.
HOT STRIP MILL
This is the first of the finishing operations. Slabs are rolled out on the hot wide-strip 1700 line to make flat rolled products for the world markets. Depending on customer requirements this sheet can be delivered in coils, cut transversely into plates or slit longitudinally into strips. The other part of production serves as the input material for subsequent cold rolling.
COLD STRIP MILL
This is the second finishing plant. The further processing of hot coils by cold rolling produces material not only with considerably reduced thicknesses, but also with mechanical, electromagnetic, surface and other special characteristics for various areas of application. Coils, plates and strips from the Cold Rolling Mill are used in the automobile, engineering and construction industries, and in the manufacture of "white" domestic appliances.
COATED PRODUCTS AND TIN MILL
This is responsible for producing Grain Non-Oriented Electrical Products, Hot Dip Galvanized and Color Coated Products. Grain Non-Oriented Electrical Products - isotropic sheet metals for electrotechnical enginnering , without or with insulation are used for production of magnetic circuits for rotating machines, small transformer coils, solenoids and electric machines to 10 kW.
Hot Dip Galvanized Products from drawing, structural and micro-alloyed grade steels are suitable for automotive, building and engineering industries. Color Coated Products which have higher oxidation and corrosion resistance are used in building, appliance industries and for production of steel furniture. Wide choice of final products is dispatched to customers in packed coils, plates and strips.
Tin Mill is responsible for producing tinplated sheets, which are in demand particularly among customers in the food processing and chemical industries. This specially thin canning material is made from cold rolled coils, which go through continuous annealing and electrolytic tinning. High quality, value added product is dispatched to customers in specially packed coils or plates.
RADIATORS AND PIPES
These operations use sheet material produced by U. S. Steel Kosice to make spiral-welded pipes and panel radiators.
Hot rolled coiled sheet passes through two welding units to make pipes of various diameters, wall thicknesses and lengths, for use by the construction industry in the building of oil, gas and water pipelines.
Cold rolled coiled sheets are pressed and then welded in various ways on two automated lines to produce panel radiators in various types and sizes.
SHIPMENT DIVISION
Shipment Division Plant is responsible for warehousing of final products and shipping them to our customers.
PRODUCTION SUPPORT DIVISIONS
The Power Engineering Division maintains production and distribution of more than twenty different types of energy, especially electrical and heat energy, compressed air, steam, various kinds of water and gas, for example oygen with nitrogen. Aiming for maximum cost reduction the Power workers also make use of metallurgical gases which originate as by-products in the making of coke, iron and steel.
The Transport Division provides services in the areas of rail and road transport to all other divisions and plants, and to co-users of the railway sidings.
The Maintenance Division performs mechanical and electrical repairs of electrical machines and metallurgical installations, provides a comprehensive service including repairs for lifting equipment. It also does repair scheduling and technical diagnostics of equipment, metrology and servicing of special equipment.
The Mechanics Division carries out repairs on machines and equipment, including manufacture of components and spare parts. It performs repairs of assemblies and spare parts reconditioning.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
The Fire Department ensures protection against fires throughout the USSK works area and contracted fire-protection zones, provides protection for people and property in the event of fire or emergency, provides support services and specialist paramedical and medical assistance. It has at its disposal the most up-to-date technology for fire-fighting, accessing and working at heights.
