Better air for the whole region

Author: U. S. Steel Košice

Kosice, November 27, 2019 – Today U. S. Steel Košice was the venue for a meeting of company representatives with the mayors of surrounding villages, focusing on issues of environmental protection. “We know that people in this region are keenly interested in environmental issues, so we wanted to provide representatives of the city of Košice and nearby villages with up-to-date information about all the things we have done in recent years to improve the environment,” says GM Environment Miloš Fodor. “We are sure that 90 percent reduction in emissions is worth bringing to people’s attention.”

U. S. Steel Košice has been working in the long term to reduce the impact of steel production on the environment. During the twenty years that the company has been operating in Slovakia, it has invested more than 660 million USD in ecological projects. Hundreds of these have been implemented, focusing on all aspects of the environment, including waste management, energy efficiency and water protection, but above all on improving air quality. The latter projects are aimed at reducing solid pollutants emitted from the cokery, sintering, blast furnaces, steel shops and power plant.

The most important investment project in the last five years was modernization of the Boiler Plant, including complete reconstruction of boiler no. 6 and construction of a new boiler no. 7 in compliance with EU requirements for implementing best available technologies (BAT). The most important project this year from the point of view of reducing solid pollutants has been the dedusting of four sinter strands based on bag filters, which is currently under completion. Altogether 15 projects have been co-financed from the Cohesion Fund through Operational Program Quality of Environment, resulting in reduction of emissions of solid pollutants at     U. S. Steel Košice by around 93 percent compared with the year 2000.
