Safety meetings

Last week, October 28th to 30th, more than six hundred managers from the operations sphere took part in meetings organized by the top management of U. S. Steel Kosice. The aim of these safety meetings was to pass on to employees the management's expectations regarding occupational safety and to reiterate their role in this area, as well as to obtain a personal commitment from each person present towards maintaining the rules of occupational safety and health protection.

Commemorative Comenius Plaque for George F. Babcoke

On Tuesday of last week, October 27th, on the occasion of the official opening of the new premises of the private secondary art school better known as the Film School in Kosice, U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke was presented with a commemorative Comenius Plaque in recognition of the outstanding support provided by U. S. Steel Kosice for the development of young film-making talents in this region. Thanks to the "More Safely in Schools" grant program, the Film School played the main part in creating a DVD teaching aid approved by the SR Ministry of Education, entitled "Safe School".

Collection or casualty surgery

Assisting the Casualty Surgery Clinic at the Louis Pasteur University Hospital in Kosice in purchasing a top-quality positionable operating table with special equipment is the aim of this year's charity collection at U. S. Steel Kosice, announced in the last few days by the Company management. It has already become a well-established tradition that the Company and the U. S. Steel Kosice Foundation both donate towards the selected good cause the same amount as the proceeds of the employees' collection. In this way the value of their assistance is tripled.

Investment conference

More than 150 participants from ten countries of the world came together in the regional metropolis of eastern Slovakia on October 22nd for the first international investment conference named Kosice Invest 2009 - Invest in the East. This event was organized by the City of Kosice in cooperation with the American Chamber of Commerce in Slovakia (AmCham). It featured a presentation by U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke, who spoke about the Company's support for the development of science, research and innovation, cooperation with Slovakian and foreign universities in carrying out research projects in the steelmaking industry and the implementation of their results in practice, but also about cooperation with secondary vocational schools in the area of preparation, upbringing and education of the younger generation.

Research staff successful in EKO 2009 competition

In the national round of the eighth edition of the international ecological competition EKO 2009, the principal organizer of which is the Faculty of Metallurgy at the Technical University in Kosice, the team composed of Ladislav Horvath, Tomas Suchy and Iveta Petikova from USSE Research took first place in the main category reserved for Employees of Organizations. With their work entitled "Analysis of the Influence of Additives on the Temperature of Ash Flow in a Smelting Pan", they will be representing the colors of Slovakia and U. S. Steel Kosice in the international round of the competition taking place in Třinec, Czech Republic, on November 19th this year.
