Highlights of 14/2010




From lecture hall to work experience

For thirty-five university and college students who were successful in the selection process, July 1st was the beginning of the latest summer internship lasting two months at the Kosice steelworks. The organizers of this ninth edition of the annual internship are staying with the tried-and-tested format once again. The young interns spend the first three days of each week working in the departments and plants they have been assigned to, in cooperation with their mentors, who involve them in dealing with various tasks and projects. The other two days are devoted to their own personal development in different kinds of management skill training.

USSK is co-founder of Coalition 2013+

The top representatives of the companies U. S. Steel Kosice, T-Systems Slovakia, VSE and Ness KDC, the not-for-profit organization Kosice - European Capital of Culture 2013, the Mayor of the City of Kosice, and the CEOs of Kosice and Presov Self-governing Regions recently signed the declaration of establishment of the Coalition 2013+. The aim of this interest group formed by the above legal entities is to support the successful implementation of the Kosice - European Capital of Culture 2013 project and ensure its long-term effectivity with a guarantee of continuity in the future.

Voluntary fundraising continues

The voluntary fundraising among the Kosice steelmakers which was recently announced by U. S. Steel Kosice management in cooperation with the OZ KOVO Trade Union Council, aiming to help the employees of USSK and its subsidiary companies in overcoming the consequences of last month's destructive floods, is still going on. Until July 23rd 2010, every Company employee can make a voluntary contribution to the collection with a deduction from their pay of five euros, or a higher sum. The specific use of the proceeds will be decided by the Social Committee of U. S. Steel Kosice, whose membership includes representatives of the trade union organization.

City mayor and council leaders thank steelmakers for help

Kosice City Mayor Frantisek Knapik and Kosice-Krasna City Ward Council Leader Marek Kazimir have sent letters of thanks to the management of U. S. Steel Kosice expressing their appreciation for the assistance provided by the Company and its employees during the rescue operations necessitated by the recent floods. Mayor Knapik especially praised the professionality and personal commitment of the steelmakers team, who gave material, technical and moral support to local residents affected by the flooding.

Families do sport this year as well

This year's event named Families Do Sport will be taking place on September 1st at the Fun Sports Area on Alejova Street in Kosice. The program naturally includes the traditional competitions in soccer, volleyball, table-tennis and darts, but there will also be non-competition opportunities to play table soccer, maxi-basketball and petanque. The organizers - U. S. Steel Kosice Public Affairs - have of course not forgotten the children, and they have prepared an attractive program for them as well.
