Jan Vranec has passed away

Last Thursday, August 12th, was the day for colleagues to pay their last respects in memory of Jan Vranec, who finally lost his fight with an insidious disease on August 10th. Jan Vranec had worked at the Kosice steelworks for 25 years. He joined the firm after graduating from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics at the Technical University in Kosice. He started out as a works electrician, but from 1990 onwards he held a series of operational management positions, finishing as General Manager Production Support. In Jan Vranec, U. S. Steel Kosice and the USS Corporation have lost a man who was a co-founder of the new way of thinking, an originator of many new directions and programs, a man who was and will always be a model for many of us, a precious friend. We will sorely miss his experience, hard work and creativity.

Three quarters of suggestions already implemented

More than five thousand U. S. Steel Kosice employees have been through this year's safety training schedule, as initiated by Vice President Operations Patrick J. Mullarkey. The aim of the safety meetings is to focus steelmakers' attention on dangerous actions and behavior so as to prevent accidents happening, but also to obtain suggestions from them about how to improve occupational safety and health protection. So far the steelmakers have contributed, either directly in discussion at meetings or later in writing, more than 150 suggestions regarding occupational safety and health protection. Most commonly they regard issues of personal protective working equipment and potential risks in the workplace. More than 70 per cent of these suggestions have already been implemented.

Minimarathon - U. S. Steel Family Run

U. S. Steel Kosice, celebrating the tenth anniversary this year of commencement of operations in Slovakia, has also stood by the Kosice Marathon for the same length of time as the event's general sponsor. This is also one of the reasons why the popular minimarathon this year bears the name Minimarathon - U. S. Steel Family Run. Everyone hopes that together with mass of exercise-hungry Kosice people, it will be U. S. Steel Kosice employees themselves with their families who make up a substantial portion of the starting field in this favorite among the race categories. The start of this year's minimarathon is planned for 9.07 am on Sunday, October 3rd, using the well-known course around the center of Kosice.
