Prize from the Kosice municipal region for George F. Babcoke

On November 26th 2010 the prize of the Kosice municipal region, for making an exceptional contribution to the development and support of sport in the region of Kosice and Eastern Slovakia, was accepted from the hands of the chairman of KSK Zdenek Trebula by the president of U. S. Steel Kosice George F. Babcoke.
This public acknowledgement is conferred by the council of the Kosice municipal region once annually to five individuals or groups or corporate bodies for their special contribution to the development of the Kosice region, for their acts of virtue, humanity or bravery, for excellent creative activities and results achieved in humanitarian, religious, cultural, artistic, journalistic, public interest, business, technical and sport activities. The president of the steelworks was nominated by the Hockey club HC Kosice and the First city handball club of Kosice for a number of reasons.
Emphasized within the proposal was the fact that George F. Babcoke has had, from the start of his work in the position of the foremost representative of USSK, a true role in the support of sport in the region of Kosice and Eastern Slovakia, and that from top flight sport - hockey, football, handball, basketball, sporting divisions for students and juniors, one-time activities for physically-challenged youth and gifted children - future hockey, basketball and football talents from socially disadvantaged families, to the building of sporting grounds. He also earned merit from the fact that the company U. S. Steel Kosice assisted even in the most difficult times, when sport in the towns and region generally struggled with financial problems.

Power plant engineers: 2 million hours without accident

On Tuesday the 30th of November 2010 the team from the Power Engineering Division Plant of U. S. Steel Kosice reached a total of 2 002 490 hours worked without injury, which is to be recorded according to OSHA. The last registered occupational accident according to OSHA was recorded on the 25th of February 2009.

New landfill of hazardous wastes already in operation

The new landfill of hazardous wastes on the grounds of U. S. Steel Kosice, fulfilling all the legislative requirements of waste management, has been in operation since the 1st of December 2010. Construction lasted five months. Building was completed in October of this year, half a month before the planned deadline and then was the official opening in the middle of November. This is the first stage of three landfilles of hazardous waste, with scheduled realization in the years from 2010 until 2028. In the fourth stage, after 2034, the landfill is to be closed and recultivated.

Third yearly meeting of long-term employees

The series of this year`s ceremonial presentation of awards for 30, 35 and 40 years served in the company U. S. Steel Kosice comes to a close on the 26th of December with the third meeting of celebrants. No fewer than 190 employees of the firm from mangement, the division plants Hot rolling mill, Cold rolling mill, and Radiators and pipes, accepted as a sign of appreciation for their long-term service gold and silver commemorative medals, and wristwatches as well for those marking their fortieth.

New mayor of Kosice takes over in the second half of December

In the municipal elections which took place on the 27th of November 2010, Slovaks in the towns and cities voted for the upcoming four-year period new magistrates, mayors and representatives for regional and town councils. The upcoming electoral period shall be headed by Richard Rasi, taking over the post of mayor from Frantisek Knapik. Swearing in of the newly-elected town council, at which the mayor and 50 representatives place their oath, takes place on the 21st of December 2010.
