Awards for most active volunteers

The fifth edition of the annual volunteer event called U. S. Steel Kosice Volunteer Days attracted more than five hundred people from the ranks of the employees of the Kosice steelworks, subsidiary companies and partner organizations. The eleven most active steelmakers were invited by U. S. Steel Kosice President David J. Rintoul to an informal working lunch on June 23, so that he could thank them for the time, work and effort they had spent on helping the needy. The award for Volunteer of the Year was presented to Rastislav Selepsky.

Hot Strip Mill joins the millionaires

This June the team of employees in USSK Hot Strip Mill Division credited their account with one million employee-hours achieved without injury. The success of the rolling mill workers was praised by U. S. Steel Kosice President David J. Rintoul at a working lunch on June 29 with ten selected employees who are among the most active in the field of occupational safety.

Risk Identification pilot project evaluated

The best part of 70 proposals arose from the assessment of risks in the operations of the Cokery, Blast Furnaces and Steel Plants divisions during the past two months. The results of the pilot project for Risk Identification using a proactive approach were evaluated on June 24 at a meeting with U. S. Steel Kosice Vice President Operations Mark Tabler. More than half of these proposals, which will help to improve results in the field of occupational safety, have already been implemented in practice by employees. USSK is the only unit of the United States Steel Corporation which has a software application in place for recording risks and employees specially trained to use it.

Summer intership for college students starts

Friday of last week, July 1, saw the beginning of the tenth summer internship for college students at U. S. Steel Kosice, the first "round-number" edition of this event. Forty-one fourth-year students, mainly from the Technical University of Kosice, have started two months of work and training at the steelworks, during which they will acquire invaluable practical and theoretical knowledge and experience that will be immensely useful to them in their future working careers.

Sheet-trimming shearing machine for Smederevo

In the next few days, no. 3 area workshops of U. S. Steel Kosice Mechanika division will be shipping out a sheet-trimming shearing machine for no. 2 pickling line at U. S. Steel Serbia's Smederevo works. Kosice employees have helped their colleagues at the sister plant by reconditioning the machine, using a unique technical solution developed by the specialist staff at the USSE R&D unit in Kosice.

AGM of Coalition 2013+ held

Members of Coalition 2013+, the interest group of legal entities which was established almost a year ago to support the Kosice Interface (European Capital of Culture) 2013 project, met on June 27 for their first Annual General Meeting (AGM). Coalition 2013+ currently has 33 members, and U. S. Steel Kosice is one of the original founder members. The members attending the AGM approved the budget for the rest of this year, as well as a plan for facilitating mutual communications between the institutions preparing the Kosice ECC 2013 project.
