The help of steelmakers culminates at Christmas time

Kosice, December 5, 2012 - Together with the lighting up of the Christmas decorations on Main Street, U. S. Steel Kosice will be opening its Charity Hut, where from December 5th to 22nd the Company will be giving the opportunity to 18 non-profit organizations to present their activities to the general public. Each day another organization will have space for that presentation and the proceeds from public fund-raising will go towards their further development. The hut will be staffed by volunteers from the ranks of the employees and the students receiving Company support for their studies at college or university. Presenting their activities and services to Kosice residents and visitors will be children's foster homes, civic associations for disabled children and adults, medical and educational organizations, and the only animal shelter in Kosice as well. On the very first day, December 5th, people will be able to contribute towards the purchase of a digital mammographic device for the Saca hospital, which improves the accessibility of diagnostic treatment for women in Kosice and enables oncological diseases to be diagnosed earlier.

The fund-raising for this health-care institution during the pre-Christmas period is also being supported by the Kosice steelmakers. The proceeds from their collection will be trebled, since the same sum as the amount collected by the employees will also be contributed by the Company itself and by the U. S. Steel Kosice Foundation. Mary Rintoul, the wife of U. S. Steel Kosice's President has decided to support the fund-raising with a special project - she has organized the publishing of a cookbook, to which the recipes have been added both by Slovak and American employees. Proceeds from the bilingual book, which links cultures and can be used as an interesting Christmas gift, will help to improve health-care in the region. In the last few years the steelmakers have collected thousands of euros for a mobile resuscitation bed for Kosice Children's Hospital or special equipment for the Louis Pasteur University Hospital in Kosice, the East Slovakian Institute for Cardio-vascular Diseases in Kosice and other health-care institutions.

In addition to the Christmas fund-raising the steelmakers also help in other ways - for the seventh year in a row they have been fulfilling children's desires through the Wishing Trees project. The employees take cards bearing children's wishes from the trees and buy toys, cosmetics, sports or school equipment which the children have been dreaming about. In addition to the wishes of children from foster homes, those of children from steelmakers' families affected by tragedy due to long-term illness or loss were added this year. In the past years the steelmakers helped to fulfill dreams of disabled children or those living in socially-deprived families. To thank them for their lasting interest and help, the children from the St. Klement Hofbauer Foster Home in Podolinec and the Uralska Street Foster Home in Kosice have prepared a Christmas program called With Love To You for the employees. The Christmas philanthropy of the steelmakers will be culminating during the charity concert on December 7th in the Kosice State Theater, where the final amount collected for the digital mammographic device will be announced, as well as the financial help for the foster homes and families in social need.

"In spite of these turbulent times we are still empathic people inside, who are not indifferent to the fate of the less fortunate. I would like to thank all the employees who take part in our philanthropic activities during the whole year and open their hearts for others at Christmas time as well," says U. S. Steel Kosice President David J. Rintoul, commenting on the steelmakers' charity.
