Košice, May 24, 2022 – Today a Memorandum of Understanding on the planned support of decarbonization projects was signed between U. S. Steel Košice and the City of Košice. On the premises of the steelmaking company the joint efforts in fulfilling the decarbonization and modernization goals with their signatures were confirmed by the President of U. S. Steel Košice James E. Bruno and the Mayor of Košice Jaroslav Polaček.
Slovak Republic is interested in supporting the decarbonization of industry and the transition to a carbon-neutral economy in order to fulfill its own ambitions arising from various international agreements. The EU has committed itself to reducing its CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990. In Slovakia, most emissions are produced by industry and therefore cooperation between the Slovak Republic and industry will be necessary to meet this goal.
U. S. Steel Košice understands the importance of achieving the EU's climate change objectives and the objectives of the Green Deal and therefore evaluates and prepares decarbonization projects, provided that it is eligible to apply and receives State aid for the implementation of decarbonization projects. It is of course critical that executing decarbonization products prove to be economically viable. The implementation of the planned decarbonization projects would ensure a significant reduction in CO2 emissions as well as the fulfilment of the Slovak Republic's objectives for the transition to a carbon neutral economy. If all projects were successful, U. S. Steel Košice could be able to reduce CO2 emissions by 6.3 million tons by utilizing state-of-the-art technology. Thanks to these projects, Slovakia would meet more than 55 percent of its decarbonization target.
The vision of low-emission steel production will require significant investment, research, technology development and efforts in decarbonization and modernization projects. The Memorandum signed with the city of Košice creates the necessary framework at the level of local self-government so that a great work environment beneficial to all is created. Slovakia will meet its goals and in the coming decades it will benefit the environment, city inhabitants, employees and shareholders. After the approval of the projects, a series of not only technical but also administrative work will follow, where each next step will be conditioned by the effective
performance of the previous ones. At the same time, it must be borne in mind that similar solutions are found in other EU countries at this time, and therefore our projects must be best managed in order to finally succeed in the tough competition.
