R & D manager Ladislav Horvath to represent USSK in WSA

On March 1st, Ladislav Horvath from the staff of GM Research and Development USSE became a member of the World Steel Association (WSA) team, where he is to work as manager for technology and environment. His new workplace for the next three years will be Beijing in China, where WSA has its representation. Researcher Horvath, until recently head of the energy, combustion and refractory materials department, will be working with his colleagues from other world steel companies on a project comparing the energy requirement levels for steel production in Chinese, South Korean and Japanese steelmaking plants, and he will be ultimately responsible for the whole project.

Together we are safer

Last Tuesday, March 22nd, was an inspection day focusing on occupational safety at the Blast Furnaces and Radiators and Pipes Divisions of U. S. Steel Kosice, which was undertaken by USSK President David J. Rintoul together with trade union leader Mikulas Hintos. They were interested in the working conditions for these divisions' employees, and offered their assistance in resolving any problems. At the same time they appealed to the employees to work safely. Similar inspection days, which are an opportunity also for uncovering potential risks in the workplace, are being planned by the President on a schedule of several times a year.

Over two million injury-free working hours at Power Engineering

The Power Engineering Division team has now worked a total of more than two million employee-hours without injury. To acknowledge this achievement, U. S. Steel Kosice President David J. Rintoul invited twelve representatives of the division to a working lunch on March 24th. The employees discussed issues of occupational safety with their host, but also talked about their everyday work, their families and their leisure interests and pastimes. David Rintoul stressed the importance of each employee being aware of their responsibility to themselves and their families, and to their colleagues in the workplace.

Employees' meetings with USSK management in April

This year's series of meetings of U. S. Steel Kosice President David J. Rintoul and top management members with the employees will be taking place between April 12th and 14th. There will be five meetings providing information about new measures and results in the area of occupational safety and health protection, about the situation in production and on the steel markets, and about the Company's development programs.

Training hall already serving its purpose

Monday of this week, March 28th, saw the official opening for use of the new training hall at the Steel Arena in Kosice. The ice-rink is already being made use of by hockey players in training, but it will experience its real endurance test during the World Ice-hockey Championships being held between April 29th and May 15th this year. The new hall has seats for 302 spectators, two large-screen displays, ten changing-rooms and a parking-lot with spaces for 39 automobiles. After the Championships the training hall will be used primarily by the youth teams of Kosice Hockey Club, and the new building creates conditions in Kosice for setting up Slovakia's first youth ice-hockey center.
