Steelmakers roll up their sleeves for Kosice

On May 17 - 18, 2013 the corporate volunteer event named U. S. Steel for Kosice was held for the seventh time, during which more than 500 employees of U. S. Steel Kosice, its subsidiaries and partner institutions helped ten Kosice organizations with their public-benefit activities. The event started with the "Steelmakers' Drop of Blood" call for blood-donors and collection of clothing and other supplies for children and adult residents at the crisis centre, and the homeless charity house.
On Saturday, dozens of volunteers assisted several other non-profit organizations as well: the autistic center, the union for the blind and partially- sighted, the botanical gardens, the Zzoo, the local environmental association, and the animal shelter. To mark Kosice's year as the European Capital of Culture 2013, they also helped with renovation of the House of Art. Through volunteering the company extends its financial and material help for NGOs with voluntary work by its employees and managers to benefit the city and region.

U. S. Steel SBS and U. S. Steel Services both with a million injury-free hours

On May 9 eleven representatives of the subsidiaries U. S. Steel - SBS, s.r.o. and U. S. Steel Services, s.r.o. met members of U. S. Steel Kosice management for a working lunch to share the success of achieving one milliion employee-hours worked withour injury in both companies. The results of these two teams providing service activities for the parent company were acknowledged by Vice President Operations Mark Tabler and Vice President Management Services and Administration Elena Petraskova.

High standard of our company's QM System

The auditors' statement from the certification company TÜV SÜD Slovakia, presented on Thursday, May 16, at the close of last week's four-day inspection audit of the continuing application of USSK's quality management system (QMS), was heard by members of the top management, the quality commissioners and other managerial staff of U. S. Steel Kosice. This first inspection audit of maintenance of the standards ISO/TS 16949 and ISO 9001, performed in accordance with the three-year certification cycle, turned out very well for the Company, and based on the assessment of the process results the certification company proposes to confirm the validity of these certificates for a further period.

European miners and steelmakers to meet in Kosice

For the first time in its history our city is to host the European Miners' and Steelmakers' Days. The 15th edition of this event will be taking place in less than three weeks' time on June 7 and 8, under the patronage of the President of the Slovak Republic Ivan Gasparovic, and will be accompanied by a wide-ranging program designed to appeal to the specialist and general public alike. The organizers of this meeting, which the best part of 1600 miners and steelmakers from many European countries have so far promised to attend, are the Association of Mining Societies and Guilds in Slovakia in cooperation with the City of Kosice and other partners.
The event will also feature the 6th meeting of the Mining Towns and Villages of Slovakia. On Friday, June 7, the Technical University is the venue for the international conference named European Mining and Steelmaking Yesterday and Today, involving active participation by USSK managers, with an accompanying exhibition. The focus of this meeting will be the exchange of information regarding raw materials policy in individual countries and the European Union as a whole, as well as technical and technological aspects of raw materials extraction and processing.
