Where and How We Will Live grant program winners known

Last Friday, March 20th, the eve of World Water Day, the Historical Town Hall in Kosice was the venue for the official announcement of results in the Where and How We Will Live grant program, which was attended by U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke and Kosice City Mayor Frantisek Knapik.
This program is organized jointly by the steel company and the Sosna Civic Association, and is intended for the pupils in all the schools in the Kosice Region. For the school year 2008-2009 a total of 25 projects were entered in the competition for a grant towards environmental activities. The jury made up of specialists from the field of education, the non-governmental sector and the program organizers selected eight projects for grant awards, and the respective schools have gained financial support for their implementation amounting to 8 310 EUR.

Aspiring to the status of Center of Specialist Education

The Secondary Specialist School in Kosice-Saca (formerly the Secondary Vocational School for Metallurgy) is attempting to gain the status of Center of Specialist Education. It meets all the criteria for doing so. In the opinion of school principal Jozef Sablatura, it is entitled to this status due to its good material resources and technical facilities, its historical development, and its close cooperation with U. S. Steel Kosice as a strong strategic partner, as well as with other employers in the East Slovakian region.
In Saca they want to build up a modern educational facility preparing specialists for selected jobs in the steelmaking industry, to develop new teaching syllabuses for practising skills and training specialists in cooperation with employers and other educational facilities in Kosice, and additionally to create the kind of educational system for preparing specialists which should ensure that its graduates possess standards of knowledge and technical skills that are comparable with similar graduates in the more developed countries of Europe, and correspond to the expectations and requirements of their future employers.
