Tricky Words in this week's OVI

Amendment. Although this is a recognized translation for "dodatok" (the Constitution of the United States of America has its important Amendments), the two words are based on different ideas. The Slovak idea is to add a bit more to make something else more complete, while the English idea is to repair something and make it better (mend means opraviť).

Another example is the changing of laws: in Slovakia laws are passed and later they are "novelizované" - the basic idea is to make them new, to keep them up to date. The English translation is "amended", so the "bad" parts are repaired and the laws are improved. If people do bad things and they want to "repair" the situation, they can "make amends" - they do something positive to change bad to good.
